What to Expect When You Purchase an Electromagnetic Flow Meter

If you’re running a facility that is equipped with a complex system of pipes, then you’re using a flow meter to measure the amount of liquid going through your pipes. If you haven’t used functional insertion electromagnetic flow meters and you’re thinking of getting a few of them, here are some things that you should know about them:

They work only on conductive fluids

If your facility is transporting liquids such as water or wastewater, then you can use electromagnetic flow meters. But if your facility is transferring combustible fluids such as gas, an electromagnetic flow meter is useless in this situation. The mechanism of an electromagnetic flow meter works in a certain way. It generates a magnetic field in the pipe. When the fluid goes through it, a voltage signal is produced, which the electrodes attached to the side of the pipe will recognize. To measure how fast the liquid is travelling, the electromagnetic flow meter will monitor and record the strength of the voltage signal. If the voltage signal is strong, it means that the flow of the liquid is fast. If the voltage signal is low, it means that the liquid is flowing slowly.

Unfortunately, this device is incapable of measuring the speed of the flow of combustible liquids. If your facility is transferring gas through its pipes, another flow meter would be more suitable for you.

They have a long service life

But the great thing about electromagnetic flow meters is that they can last long. They are capable of working for 30 years. If you buy one today, you won’t have to worry about replacing it the following year.

They are low-maintenance

Another advantage of an electromagnetic flow meter is its low maintenance. A lot of flow meters have several components or several moving parts, which makes them more fragile. On the other hand, electromagnetic flow meters don’t have any moving parts, so they’re easier to use. They don’t need to be monitored for broken parts that much.

Electromagnetic flow meters are also easy to install. They are not that complex that you need to install them one by one into your piping system. All you have to do is grab one flow meter, attach it to one of your pipes, and the gadget will start measuring and recording your liquid flow.

They can measure high pressures and high temperatures

Another advantage of an electromagnetic flow meter is that it can measure high pressures and high temperatures easily and safely as long as you’re using a remote transmitter. Some flow meters need to be manually operated, which can be dangerous or uncomfortable if the vicinity of the piping system is too hot. But if you have a remote transmitter that can relay to you the readings of your electromagnetic flow meter from a distance, then you don’t have to be near the meter at all.

They can read low flows

Electromagnetic Flow Meter

Another advantage of an electromagnetic flow meter is that no matter how low the flow of your liquid is, it can still record it and give you an accurate reading. Some flow meters are incapable of sensing very low liquid flows.

You know that your pipes aren’t carrying too much liquid, but you can’t accurately say how much. But electromagnetic flow meters can sense liquid flows as low as one foot per second. No matter how slow the liquid flow can get, you can still have an accurate measurement.
